Horace Gene Hammond was born and initially raised in Saltillo, Texas. His mother became a widow at a very young age and was faced with raising three small children in the depths of the Great Depression. The early life lessons and family values passed along to Gene would later serve to shape a remarkable man.

Along about 1970 Brian Robertson figuratively ran into a roadblock -- his father. Parked on a local dealer's used car lot was a 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu two-door hardtop that beckoned the high school student every time he passed by. Robertson's dad soon squelched the prospect of a Chevelle at the teen's home.

"It was a nice-looking car," Robertson says, "with a timeless design."

A week before his wedding in March 1964 Tom Horstkamp decided to be responsible and sell his motorcycle. However, he still had the desire for a toy. One day on his way home from work, Horstkamp saw a car with an interesting shape sitting in a used car lot in Hyattsville, Md.
